In late 2007, on Thanksgiving Day, our good friend, Emmy Award winning makeup and special effects artist Kelly Gleason, lost her battle with cancer at the age of 41. Her passing left a void in the industry, and in the lives of all those she had touched, that won’t soon be filled.
More than a makeup artist - Kelly was a true artisan in the purest sense of the word - sculptor, painter, designer and makeup artist, but also a crafter of words as a leader in the business of makeup artistry and a creator of passions as an educator.
Her roles were many: As an artist, she inspired us with her work in such amazing projects as Pollack, Amistad HBO’s Angels in America and Oz. As the President of I.A.T.S.E. Local #798, Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Union, she helped bring a renewed sense of integrity and fairness to the role and to the organization. As teacher and mentor she inspired countless others to build their future on a combination of strength of determination, fearlessness of spirit and perfection of craft.
It is in that spirit of giving, and sharing that we offer, in her name, The Kelly Gleason Scholarship for the Makeup Arts - an opportunity for a student to share that sense of belonging, creativity and excitement, that being a part of the makeup artistry industry provides.
Kelly’s passion was Special Effects, most of her craft and career were built around this fascinating area. We, at The Powder Group, felt that the best way we could honor Kelly, her work, and her place in the industry was by helping a makeup artist who shared that passion, integrity and drive to reach the goals they have been striving for. In a partnership with Make-Up Designory and Alcone, we are pleased to be offering this new annual scholarship to a student of discipline of Special Effects each year.
Details on applying for the scholarship will be available this Spring. To be forwarded information about applying for The Kelly Gleason Scholarship For the Makeup Arts please forward your name and contact information to KGSFMA@thepowdergroup.com and information will be sent to you as soon as it becomes available.
